Does Medicare cover me outside the United States?

Usually not. Medicare.gov states that Medicare usually doesn't cover health care while you're traveling outside the U.S., and in most cases you pay all of the costs. Rare exceptions include a medical emergency in the U.S. where a foreign hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat you, and care on a cruise ship in a U.S. port or no more than 6 hours away from one. Some Medigap policies include a foreign travel emergency benefit; plans C, D, F, G, M, and N pay 80% of covered emergency charges, up to plan limits. Medicare drug plans don't cover prescription drugs bought outside the U.S.

What is the age limit for SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Essential?

You can buy the Essential plan up to age 69. If you turn 70 during your coverage period, your plan remains valid until the end of that term, with no option to buy a new one. There is no enrollment at age 70 or older.

Does SafetyWing Essential cover pre-existing conditions?

No. SafetyWing treats a condition as pre-existing if, in the 180 days before your start date, you received or were recommended medical advice or treatment for it, had medication prescribed or changed for it, or had symptoms a reasonable person would have seen a doctor about. SafetyWing asks no medical questions when you buy; the definition is applied if you claim. The policy also excludes chronic conditions, and there is no waiver you can buy to remove this exclusion. The policy contains a specific section on emergency treatment of a pre-existing illness or injury — read it in the current policy before relying on it.

Does SafetyWing Essential cover trip cancellation?

No. Essential has no trip-cancellation benefit. It covers trip interruption only as a one-way economy ticket home for narrow events: fire or weather destroying more than 40% of your home, or the death of a parent, spouse, sibling, child, or grandchild.

Is there a deductible on SafetyWing Essential?

No. SafetyWing states that this plan has no deductible.

How much medical evacuation cover does Essential include?

Up to US$100,000 over your lifetime, for transport to the nearest adequately equipped hospital. It is a lifetime cap, not a per-trip cap, and it does not reset with a new trip or a new plan. Search and rescue is not covered. SafetyWing also covers a one-way economy ticket back to your home country, up to US$5,000.

How does the 28-day billing work?

On subscription, the plan bills every 4 weeks and auto-extends, up to a maximum of 364 days. You can also pay upfront for a set number of days, from a minimum of 5 days to a maximum of 364. You can cancel anytime from your SafetyWing dashboard; cover ends at the end of the current paid period. When a plan reaches 364 days and a new plan begins, any condition that arose during the previous plan counts as pre-existing under the new one.

How do claims work with SafetyWing Essential?

It is primarily a pay-and-claim plan: you pay the provider first, keep itemized bills and records, and submit a claim for reimbursement. SafetyWing's policy states you need to claim within 60 days of the end date of your active insurance period. For an inpatient stay outside the U.S., direct payment to the hospital may be possible if arranged in advance.

Can U.S. citizens buy the U.S. coverage add-on?

No. SafetyWing's U.S. coverage add-on is not available to U.S. citizens or residents.

What does SafetyWing Essential cost at ages 50 to 69?

SafetyWing prices the plan by age band and bills every 28 days. SafetyWing's published pages state the youngest band's price and that prices increase with age; they do not publish a 50-to-69 price table. The price checker on the coverage page is SafetyWing's own and shows the current live price for the ages and dates you enter.
