This plan is a subscription, and its renewal rule has one consequence every long-trip traveler over 50 should understand before the first payment.

How am I billed?

On subscription, the plan bills every 4 weeks (28 days) and auto-extends, up to a maximum of 364 days.

Can I pay upfront instead?

Yes — you can pay upfront for a set number of days, from a minimum of 5 days to a maximum of 364. SafetyWing's comparison page states that paying upfront for 364 days carries a 10% discount.

How do I cancel?

Anytime, from your SafetyWing dashboard. Cover then ends at the end of the current paid period.

What happens when a plan reaches 364 days?

A new plan begins — and any condition that arose during the previous plan counts as pre-existing under the new one. A condition you develop in month three can be uncovered from month thirteen onward.

Can I treat this as my ongoing health cover while I live abroad?

SafetyWing's own FAQ says Essential should not be used as ongoing health insurance. The 364-day reset above is the mechanical reason why.
