Pre-existing conditions: what is not covered

Coverage page · All questions

This is the exclusion that decides the plan's fit for most travelers over 50, so it gets its own page. Every answer is SafetyWing's published position.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

No. SafetyWing states that pre-existing conditions are not covered on the Essential plan.

How does SafetyWing decide whether a condition is pre-existing?

A condition counts as pre-existing if, in the 180 days before your start date, you received or were recommended medical advice or treatment for it, had medication prescribed or changed for it, or had symptoms a reasonable person would have seen a doctor about.

Will SafetyWing ask about my health before I buy?

SafetyWing asks no medical questions when you buy. The pre-existing definition is applied if you claim — which means the answer arrives at the worst possible moment if you have not read it first.

Are chronic conditions treated differently?

SafetyWing's policy also excludes chronic conditions as their own category, on top of the pre-existing exclusion.

Can I buy a waiver to remove this exclusion?

No. SafetyWing offers no pre-existing condition waiver for this plan. Some other kinds of policies sell a waiver if you buy early enough after a first trip payment; this plan has no such mechanism.

What about a sudden emergency caused by an existing condition?

SafetyWing's policy contains a specific section titled “Emergency treatment of a pre-existing illness or injury.” The existence of that section is in the policy; its detailed terms are not stated on SafetyWing's public product pages, so we do not summarize them here. Read that section in the current policy document before relying on it — and it is one of the questions on our unanswered questions page, where we track SafetyWing's written answer.
